FACEBOOK ENLISTS YOU TO FIGHT FAKE NEWS – WEEKLY SOCIAL WRAP-UP
Weekly Social Wrap-Up is our update on the most tender, juiciest, leanest cut of news happening in the social media world. Today, we join Facebook’s fight against fake news, and look at Instagram’s new hands-free feature.
Facebook Wants You To Join The Fight
Facebook has revealed a five-part plan to cleanse the social media of faux publishers who are making a living off click-bait headlines containing blatant untruths. The plan include user-reported fake news, fact-checkers and “sharing signals” which could flag articles which have significantly less shares. Now the fight is on!
Instagram Launches “Hands-free” Recording
In addition to the new sticker button where users can add weather, time and location to their images, Instagram also improved its video recording function. You can now tap to start and finish a recording, rather than having to hold the record button down for the entire recording. That’s really handy!
Facebook Tests Coloured Text Backgrounds
Facebook is testing a new coloured background option for text updates. This is oddly only available to Android users. The rest of us should see the coloured updates, but won’t be able to create them, unfortunately. We’re not sure if this makes text updates more interesting though.
We all hate those click-baity headlines (admittedly, we still fall prey to them), but reporting fake news is just unacceptable. We’re happy to see these features and innovation coming from Facebook as they lead the change. Let’s hope in the future we can see publishers being penalised, or even to the extend of being blocked by browsers.
